The Buzz......
Chickenfoot
A game where the placement of the dominoes is such that the pattern begins to resemble a chicken’s foot due to the placement of the dominoes in a diagonal pattern, rather than the traditional right-angle form.
Coed water volleyball
A series of games of water volleyball with both men and women participating. Teams are formed up on an ad hoc basis with varying numbers of players on a team depending on how many people are available to play at any given time. The rules are very relaxed and allow no limit on the number of hits per person or per team, only five consecutive serves per team, no spiking, and an Olympic-style scoring system where a point is awarded on every serve.
Grill night
A casual occasion where you bring something to throw on the grills (which are provided and pre-heated), a dish to share, your eating utensils and your favorite beverage. While some compare notes on the best grilling techniques, others share favorite recipes or attempt to solve the latest problems in the galaxy.
Gringo bingo
A traditional favorite where the familiar calls of “B-4” or “N-36” eventually result in the cry of “Bingo!” accompanied by groans from the rest of the players who “only needed one more number” to have been the winner.
Happy Hour
The daily 4:00 pm event at which friends gather to share observations, comments, profound thoughts, laughs and raise a glass if so inclined to being among the “family” that exists here at Sandpipers.
Mexican bingo
Mexican bingo is a game of chance, similar to regular Bingo, but using images on a deck of cards instead of plain numbers on ping pong balls. Every image has a name and an assigned number, and each player has at least one board with a randomly created 4 x 4 grid of pictures with their corresponding name and number. The caller randomly selects a card from the deck and announces it to the players by its name, sometimes using a riddle or humorous patter instead of reading the card name. The players with a matching pictogram on their board mark it off with a chip or other marker. The first player with four chips in a horizontal, vertical or diagonal row, squared pattern, or any other previously specified pattern is the winner.
Noodling
The act of floating in the pool suspended by one or more “noodles” while relaxing, socializing and soaking up the ambiance of Sandpipers Resort.
Petanque
A game where you throw your ball at a pig! Actually, Petanque, (pronounced "pay-tahnk"), is a distant relative of horseshoes, and a first cousin of the Italian 'bocce'. The aim is to toss, or roll a number of steel balls ("boules") as close as possible to a small target ball, called the pig. Players take turns and the team that ends up closest to the target ball when all balls are played, wins. Petanque games traditionally occur daily at 10 am and 2 pm at the courts north of the tennis enclosure. Don’t worry if you’ve never played or don’t have your own equipment, new faces are always welcomed and there is an ample supply of loaner balls for everyone.
Tai Chi
Tai Chi is often described as "meditation in motion" because it promotes serenity through gentle movements — connecting the mind and body. It is a noncompetitive, self-paced system of gentle physical exercise and stretching. To do tai chi, you perform a series of postures or movements in a slow, graceful manner. Each posture flows into the next without pausing. Anyone, regardless of age or physical ability, can practice tai chi. It doesn't take physical prowess. Rather, tai chi emphasizes technique over strength.
Tennis
The courts are available at any time unless they have been reserved by signing up on the white board attached to the fence by the courts. If a question mark appears on a line of the sign-up board, it means that they are looking for someone to fill out the . On most days a regular group can be found at the courts at 9:00 am perfecting their doubles’ form.
Walkabout
Join the individuals and small groups that make it a part of their daily fun to either stroll leisurely or stride aggressively around the park during the early morning hours. Not only does it burn calories, tone muscles and clear the head, it is rumored that when walking with others, great ideas occur spontaneously and problems that have baffled the minds of man (and woman) for ages have been solved.
Water aerobics
Frankie leads this always popular morning activity in the pool. With her perky spirit, excellent choice of music, and a group of lively friends, this is an excellent activity to start your day.
